[hear silence. now] is an exhibition made up of visual signs and symbols that seek to reach beyond the visible world and communicate with possible invisible ones. Lottie Consalvo points to our increasing detachment from nature and the mystical and how this perpetuates our preoccupation with reason and logic. The artist seeks to return us to where we once believed in things that could not be proven but that we felt in our bones and in the air around us. The works seek to break through the wall in the sky and into ‘somewhere else’, a place that is undetermined, ungoverned, and unknown. Here we might find respite from the hard edges of the real, if only in our minds.
I ran at the horizon
I grunted and moaned
I tore through the sky
And I found what we have all been looking for
[expand]
(hear noise. now)
It was brimming with chaos,
Loud with voices,
Life packed in like sardines.
[recoil]
(hear silence. now)
But I couldn’t see a thing.
[open a little]
This is not a place for eyes,
Only the feeling type can see here,
(picture a statue of a goddess against a grey sky as the camera moves)
I move into the light quickly
I’m afraid of the dark,
and I don’t go back
But sometimes I feel it in the wind
(picture a white handkerchief caught on a branch flapping in heavy winds and rain)
My feet sit in soil,
My heart is hinged to love,
And my hands hold the buildings around me
Incase they all fall down
[pause]
For if I don’t, I might see the invisible,
Hear the inaudible,
Feel the ineffable and
fly away
