EMMA FIELDEN ‘The Unseen’ at Blacktown Arts Centre

July 28, 2024

Emma Fielden will be re-devising ‘States of Matter’ as part of group show ‘The Unseen’ at Blacktown Arts Centre from 3.08. – 9.10.23. The work was performed at Dominik Mersch Gallery in 2018 as part of Emma’s solo exhibition ‘Between Stars, Between Stones’. On the work, the artist says: “With these thoughts in mind I ask myself, what actually is the distance between two points? What is the distance between two stars, between two mountains, two stones, two humans? Like two points in space or two points in time, can individuals ever really coexist in a mutual psychological space of true understanding? Can we get inside another person’s head, or are we ultimately separated by an infinitely divisible and uncrossable void?”

In partnership with Parramatta Artists’ Studio, the group show explores the invisible qualities of our world as a metaphor for personal or collective reflection. Parramatta Artists’ Studios artists and alumni Emma Fielden, James Nguyen, Emily Parsons-Lord, Owen Leong and Lisa Sammut, present a contemplative and deeply felt examination of the intangible qualities of memory, cosmos, and sensation.

‘The Unseen’ opening event is on Friday 4th August from 6pm to 7pm with a live installation performance of ‘State of Matter’ by Emma Fielden with Lizzie Thomson. There will also be a mesmerising live activation of the work by Emma during the exhibition’s opening weekend on Saturday 5th August from 10am to 5pm.

On Saturday 19th August, Emma will conduct the ‘States of Matter: Cutting the Thread’ performance from 1pm to 2pm, followed by a panel discussion led by curator, Liz Chang, from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.
