MENG-YU YAN  ‘Double Parallax’ at The Cube, Mosman Art Gallery

September 20, 2023

A new collaboration between Meng-Yu Yan and Anna May Kirk will be exhibited at  The Cube, Mosman Art Gallery, from 23/09/23-03/12/23.  ‘Double Parallax’ features twin optical sculptures that interplay glass, shadow and light to recreate a parallax effect: the changing perception of an object in relation to its background, based on the position and movement of a viewer.

Meng-Yu Yan is a photomedia artist based in Sydney, their work encompasses a variety of mediums including video, installation, aquaria, performance, sculpture, and projection. Yan seeks to challenge the idea of the photograph existing only in two-dimensions, breaking down boundaries between image and reality. Yan has often used mirrors in his past work, with emphasis on the reflective materiality and superstitions.  Now, in collaboration, Yan’s explorations of reflection and refraction become 3-dimensional, promoting changes of light with movement and perspective. Through this, there is an interactive element, reliant on viewers experiences to change giving gravity to our cosmic reality.
