JULIAN DAY ‘Super Critical Mass’ at Parramatta Gaol

March 30, 2024

Julian Day has been working with the River City Voices and eighty local participants from Parramatta to create an ambitious site-responsive work using voices, found percussion and the space. The performance will be live and open to the public on Saturday 1st April from 2-3pm at the Parramatta Gaol, North Parramatta, as well as filmed by Powerhouse Parramatta to become a future video work.

‘Super Critical Mass’ is an ongoing participatory sound project in which temporary communities form within ‘the commons’. Members of the local community come together to create monochromatic sound fields using identical sound sources (bowls, coins, voice) in public locations such as parks, streets, malls and libraries, following memorized instructions developed within in-situ workshops. SCM has presented work in New York, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, The Hague, Prague and throughout Australia. It has featured at Museum Of Contemporary Art Australia, Queensland Art Gallery Of Modern Art, MATA Festival, Prague Quadrennial , Liquid Architecture, Shepparton Art Museum and Orange County Museum Of Art. SCM is directed by artist and composer Julian Day.
