GARY DEIRMENDJIAN ‘neither here nor there’ at Contour 556

Gary Deirmendjian’s intervention ‘neither here nor there’ is currently on display as part of Canberra’s Art Biennial ‘Contour 556’ on a forested nature strip between the High Court and National Gallery of Australia from 1.10. – 29.10.22.

Curated by Neil Hobbs, Contour 556 is “the water level of Lake Burley Griffin, which links the event in name as well as in purpose to the history of the central Canberra landscape.” The public art festival’s selected works respond to Canberra’s history and presents a unique opportunity for the Australian and international community to engage with the layers of the city’s past through art.

Deirmendjian’s artwork statement reads: “amongst the many fully established trees, a few of equal value and substance stand impossibly in bulk handling bags with their mobility assured … alluding to powers without, be they a force of nature or that by decree. Have they been placed there or is it elsewhere ‘they’ now plan for them to be …”
