Catherine O’Donnell is being exhibited in the group show ‘DETAIL’ at DRAW Space from 07.03. – 31.03.24. The exhibition seeks to showcase the complex world of detailed drawings, and encourage viewers to contemplate, both experientially and conceptually, the often overlooked subtleties of detail in drawing, its capacity for visual storytelling, and the mastery of drawing techniques needed to capture minute detail. The rationale states: “Drawing can be described as an activity as much as a medium. The act of drawing is often valued for its characteristics of directness, quickness, simplicity, abbreviation, and immediacy. However, the act of drawing can also be valued for the opposite characteristics, as labour intensive work requiring time and considerable attention to detail.”
Catherine’s drawings examine these specific urban dwellings as a site of complexity, it is an exploration of the architecture, social history, the everyday and the notion of home. She ties identity, history and culture to these façades, they are ubiquitous, they are unique and they are personal all at the same time. Through her drawings she analyses the way that vernacular architecture and general street scapes of places we regularly inhabit become recessed into our minds like wallpaper – they are at once visible and invisible.
