ANNE ZAHALKA Featured in ‘Talking Pictures: Interviews with Photographers Around the World’ Article

December 22, 2024

An interview with Anne Zahalka is featured in the article ‘Kith & Kin: The Many Faces of Family’ on ‘Talking Pictures: Interviews with Photographers Around the World’. Ten international artists and an archivist were chosen to select a photograph that speaks to them on the significance of family in “its many ways of being and being understood.”

Anne selected her theatrical and highly constructed portrait work ‘The Papapetrou Family’. The artist says: “I photographed the family in their large two-storey house in Fitzroy, Melbourne, some weeks before the artist Polixeni Papapetrou passed away. Her husband Robert holds a painter’s palette, while their son Solomon and daughter Olympia wear costumes they respectively wore in her memorable series, ‘The Ghillies’ and ‘Eden’. Child-sized dolls stand with the grotesque masks featured in ‘The Dreamkeepers’, and, resting in the foreground, are the family’s two rescue greyhounds, Lexi and Mille.” The worlds she created in her art-making coexist with the family in a scene that hovers between reality and an imaginary elsewhere.

‘Talking Pictures’ will publish a full interview with Anne in 2024.
