‘Rest Energy’ was part of Piers Greville’s solo show ‘Isolation’ at Sandbox Studios in Melbourne, a space that doubles as a life drawing classroom. This show placed his tree anatomy paintings in dialogue with the human figure in art. For this series, Piers focuses his attention on singular trees rather than sweeping landscapes, rendering their bark in rich detail. He then isolates this close view of the tree against a grey background, despite its truly interconnected way of being within the world. Greville was the winner of our Dominik Mersch Gallery / Victorian College of the Arts Award in 2018, which was followed by his inaugural solo show at DMG in February 2019, titled ‘Siren Song Creek’. In 2019, Piers won the Glover Prize for his work ‘Pedder Prime Cuts’ and this year he has been selected as a finalist in both the Glover Prize and the Athenaeum Club Visual Arts Research Award.
