‘Phase Space 2’ was first exhibited in Piers Greville’s 2020 solo show ‘Tipping Point’. The aerial perspective and vivid aquamarine colouring of this work echo the dislocated global view offered by digital mapping and satellite imagery. The vertical thrust and absence of horizon line make this rippling Australian landscape appear seemingly endless, further emphasising our dislocated spectatorship of natural reserves. Through this, Greville seeks to capture something of this seismic moment in collective awareness of our place in the environment.
“I spent much of the summer studying and updating fire maps. These maps are created using infrared scans of the landscape, with software connecting vectors. This idea of an electronic data-hungry analytical eye scanning a terrain too dangerous for humans to exist in, feeds much of my current work. It is not a futuristic concept, but in fact the recent past and present.”
Greville was the winner of our Dominik Mersch Gallery / Victorian College of the Arts Award in 2018, which was followed by his inaugural solo show at DMG in February 2019, titled ‘Siren Song Creek’. In 2019, Piers won the Glover Prize for his work ‘Pedder Prime Cuts’ and this year he has been selected as a finalist in both the Glover Prize and the Athenaeum Club Visual Arts Research Award.
