KEI TAKEMURA

‘Playing Card / Spades 3 on Diamonds Jack’ was first exhibited in Kei Takemura’s 2020 solo show ‘Which leaf is falling?‘. The artist collects playing cards from different countries and eras, layering them with embroidered fabric that has been stitched with the design of cards from another time or culture. In this way, she tentatively ties together playing cards from Germany, France, Japan and America. Spades hover over the Jack of Diamonds to bring fragments of memory towards a delicate but tangible existence. This technique adapts the Japanese method of kintsugi, using layers of diaphanous cloth and silk thread in place of lacquer and gold foil.

Takemura first exhibited in Australia as part of the 15th Biennale of Sydney in 2006 and has continued to strengthen her international presence through major exhibitions, biennales and workshops. This includes solo shows across Europe and Asia, notably in Berlin, Tokyo, Singapore and Zurich. In 2020, Takemura will be exhibiting at Maitland Regional Art Gallery, the Parkview Museum in Singapore, Ichihara Art x Mix in Japan, and the Yokohama Triennale.
