Philip Wolfhagen Highly Commended Award in the 2019 Hadley’s Art Prize

July 25, 2019

The 2019 Hadley’s Art Prize has awarded Philip Wolfhagen the Highly Commended Award for his panoramic triptych ‘Approaching the cusp’.

Philip says of the work, “I find the approaching gloom of night a visually exciting time; the mutability of light, and inevitable loss that brings on an urgency and serves to heighten all of the senses. The fleeting moment when our perception of colour is almost lost, but the darker forms in the landscape take on a precise tonal weight, is an ongoing area of interest for me. Whilst founded on observation of the natural world, my paintings are personal meditations on the significance of my relationship with Nature and represent an ongoing investigation about what meaning still resides in our relationship with landscape.”

Philip was among 33 artists to be selected as a finalist for the prize, which was awarded to Pupunya-based artist Carbiene McDonald Tjangala for his work entitled ‘Four Dreamings’. The exhibition continues until 18.08.19.
