Meng-Yu Yan in photographic show at STACKS Projects

November 2, 2018

‘being | becoming’ is an exhibition curated by Lauren Castino and DMG Gallery Manager Alanna Irwin, featuring works by Meng-Yu Yan that engage with photography as a fluid material. Meng’s photomedia works use fabric, water refractions and digital layering to actively reveal and conceal the hidden self, reflecting on their Australian-Chinese queer identity. Alongside these works, Melbourne-based artist Noah Spivak experiments with ‘growing’ photo-chemical materials over time to question the idea that photographs are past moments mummified for the present. Together, these works reconsider and reconstitute photography to frame ‘being’ as something that is constantly in transition. The artists act as tricksters and alchemists through their materials, asking viewers to question their belief in the finiteness of appearances in photographs. This exhibition will be on until 18 November at STACKS Projects in Kings Cross, Sydney.
