Locust Jones scroll work acquired by the Art Gallery of NSW

March 8, 2019

We’re thrilled to announce that the Art Gallery of NSW recently acquired Locust Jones’ commanding 10-metre scroll drawing ‘The end of the beginning, New Year’s Eve to April fools’. Referenced in the current Look magazine, this major acquisition follows on from the work’s inclusion in the 2018 Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial exhibition ‘Playback’ and was made possible by The Gil and Shay Docking Drawing Fund and The Dobell Biennial Acquisition Fund.

To create this large-scale drawing, Locust worked every day for three months without a vision of the overall image. Every morning before unrolling a section of the paper scroll he listened to the radio, read the papers and trawled through online news, gleaning headlines and images that feed into his daily drawing without filter. In this work, you can follow a visual diary of the events and people that made the daily news from New Year’s Eve to April Fools’ Day 2018.
