Kei Takemura Nagashima Yurie × Takemura Kei at the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma

July 13, 2019

Yurie Nagashima × Kei Takemura ‘Now ⇆ Then’ opens tomorrow 13 July at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, and continues until 1 September 2019. Both artists seek to unpack the individual narratives that tie them to the Japanese city of Takasaki, touching on the universal threads that connect ‘then’ and ‘now’ through layers of memory and material.

Kei Takemura explores the memories of what has been lost in embroidered photographs, drawings and playing cards. In her latest silk thread works created in Gunma, she attempts to turn memory and time into works of art that bridge Tokyo and Takasaki; places that, for the artist, personally connect to the past and to the present. Alongside writer and photographer Yurie Nagashima, Takemura explores family and change through tender portrayals of the everyday.
