Julian Day performance work at Tate Modern, London

May 19, 2018

Julian Day will be presenting ‘LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT’ at the Tate Modern, London, as part of the Joan Jonas exhibition program ‘Stages Of Production’. His performance pays homage to Jonas’ groundbreaking video and performative works such asLeft Side Right Side (1972).

Sitting upon the ground and out of view from each other, the performers (including the artist himself) each play a small synthesiser abutting an upright mirror. Alongside each mirror is a flatscreen monitor that displays a live feed of another performer’s hands, offering a visual ‘score’ to play from and emulate. This work establishes a complex and dynamic feedback loop between the performers, considering the relationship between symmetry and asymmetry as well as the material contradictions of video technology. You can see this performance from 12 – 1:30PM, Saturday 19.05.18 on Level 5 of the Tate Modern’s Blavatnik Building, London.
