JANET LAURENCE in ‘Arboreal Narratives’ at Grace Cossington Smith Gallery

Environmental artist Janet Laurence participates in a group exhibition in honour of trees this October at The Grace Cossington Smith Gallery, Wahroonga, Sydney. Curated by Louise Fowler-Smith, this exhibition includes works that will create an interdisciplinary experience of the important environmental subject – the tree. Featuring works by Janet Laurence, Guillermo Batiz with Dr Tamryn Bennett, Paula Broom, Dr Maria Fernanda Cardoso, Amanda Farquharson, Louise Fowler-Smith, Elizabeth Gervay, Ian Grant, Jane Green, Hobart Hughes, Haruka Kokubu, Liz Perfect, and Miho Watanabe.

The artists respond to ‘Arboreal Narratives’ through the use of a variety of media, including audio-visual installation, video, photography, iPhoneography, light box installation, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textiles and glass installation. The event includes a Symposium which will involve presentations by a scientist, two poets and a musician.

The show runs from 5 October to 2 November 2019, with the Symposium held on Saturday 19 October 1.30 – 2.30PM.

Janet Laurence. Knowledge (Tree of Life), 2018-19. Botanical books from the artist’s private library, artists sketch books, wood specimens, prints on watercolour paper, prints on opalescent paper, handwritten text, video extracts, plywood, metal, duraclear and bird’s nests.
