Gregor Schneider’s video documentation of his work ‘Goebbels’ Birth House, Rheydt, 2014′ will be featured in a special exhibition at the Salon Voltaire in Schloss Bellevue, Berlin, Germany from 13.06. – 28.06.26. The official residence of the Federal President will be transformed into a temporary site for the arts.
In 2013, Schneider transformed the birthplace of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels into an artwork that confronts the legacy of Germany’s Nazi past. After acquiring the long-forgotten house in Rheydt, the artist stripped its interior to the outer walls and ultimately pulverised its remnants, questioning how societies repress and engage with sites marked by historical violence.
Combining architectural intervention, research, film, and documentation, the project examines the relationship between space, memory, and ideology. Rather than offering answers, Schneider’s work poses a challenging question: what responsibility do we have toward places that embody difficult histories?
