Piers Greville’s landscape paintings in ‘Tipping Point’ offer rippling aerial views that are akin to digital mapping and satellite imagery. He emulates a general global view from above and afar, enhancing this surreal position with arresting monochrome. Greville extends and unfolds the landscape in a way that makes the Australian mountain terrain seem endless and powerful. In doing so, he seeks to capture something of this seismic moment in collective awareness of our place in the environment, continuing his ongoing research into landscape and mapping.

“I spent much of the summer studying and updating fire maps. These maps are created using infrared scans of the landscape, with software connecting vectors. This idea of an electronic data-hungry analytical eye scanning a terrain too dangerous for humans to exist in, feeds much of my current work. It is not a futuristic concept, but in fact the recent past and present.”

Piers Greville is a Melbourne-based artist working predominantly with the medium of painting to investigate our dwindling natural ecologies and their intersection with the human-built world. Greville combines traditions of the Sublime — where mountainous terrains are painted with precision in oils and watercolour — with a contemporary outlook on the way that we segment landscapes. In 2019, Greville won the DMG/VCA Award and the prestigious Glover prize for landscape painting.
