Piers Greville facilitates a contemporary re-imagining of the landscape and its narratives through the oil painting medium. The works which make up ‘Holiday In Heterotopia’ are based on a place named Kunama Namadgi, which is also known as the Kosciusko High Country in Australia. Painted as sculpted forms suspended within romantic landscape views, the paintings critically reflect on settler myths in a state of recursive self-cancelling desire.

“These are pictures fuelled by the demise of a country I am deeply in love with. It is a demise due in part to the objectifying and mythologising gaze it is subject to, steeped in European romantic and settler narratives.”

Amongst other things, the title ‘Holiday In Heterotopia’ alludes to the methodology of ‘thinking through sculpture’ which has led these paintings. In representing these sculptural forms through the act of painting, Greville suspends them as an ‘other place’ in relation to their field: a Heterotopia.
