Catherine O’Donnell presents a new series of drawings which contemplate urban dwellings and their relationship to the essence of home. The artist’s work tests the balance between realism and abstraction through a delicate interplay of light and dark; architectural detail and negative space; human presence and absence. She conducts an ongoing enquiry into the suspended narratives borne from inhabited spaces that whisper of the memories once lived within. Catherine seeks to celebrate the ‘banal’ architecture of the streetscapes and interiors most familiar to us, whose ubiquity often prevents their underlying beauty from being appreciated.

Accompanying the charcoal and graphite drawings are a series of gilded stereolithographic sculptures of fibro houses. Working with gold leaf, the artist transforms these structures into ethereal, shimmering shrines to their architectural style.
