DETAIL, 'Holding Yard (1000)', 2020, drypoint on Hahnemühle 300gsm paper

Garstang’s upcoming solo show ‘Another Orbit’ involves unique drypoint prints, kinetic copper sculpture and night-vision video work, that taps into rural Australian rituals, unsettling audiences through a new printmaking series of empty holding yards hovering over a hazy, ambiguous landscape. Threatening containment, these structures ask us to imagine how we would move and detain livestock in the future, and what this stock would look like?

His most recent video work stalks through a tall, tangled field at night, slowly building suspense in a way that blurs the boundary between hunter and hunted. In the middle of the gallery space, a spinning copper structure holding a taxidermy crow physically funnels the viewer through the space, extending on Garstang’s long-running theme of cyclical time and generational memory.

Liam Garstang’s practice transforms the familiar rituals and psychogeography of rural NSW into expressive, uncanny recollections, using mediums as various as night-vision video works, sculpture, installation and printmaking. He has held solo exhibitions at Wagga Wagga City Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Cassa da Zorra in Portugal and Megalo Print Studios + Gallery in Canberra. He has been selected as a finalist in the Pro Hart Outback Art Prize and The Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Artists’ Travel Scholarship. Notably, Garstang was selected as the winner of the prestigious Macquarie Group Emerging Art Prize in 2017.
