Catherine O’Donnell’s latest wall drawing ‘Fibro Vernacular’ has been installed on 55 5th Avenue in New York. As her first public art project in the city, the work continues the artist’s exploration into the architecture, culture, and history of familiar urban environments.
Catherine’s use of vinyl tape work reduces a building to its most basic geometry. The removal of everyday architecture from its surroundings facilitates a new perspective on its social and personal narratives unencumbered by context. The interplay between O’Donnell’s minimalist tape works and detailed charcoal drawings furthers her oscillation between memory, illusion, and reality. She says: “It is the elevation of the abstract form, the underpinning geometry and the distillation of the spatial composition that interests me … I use representation as a catalyst to ignite the imagination of the viewer and invite them to look beyond the mundane and banal.”
Catherine will be presenting a new body of work as part of her upcoming solo exhibition ‘Looking In: Abstract View of Suburbia‘, which opens on Saturday 19th July. Please register for her waitlist here.
