ANNE ZAHALKA & THOMAS WEINBERGER ‘Civilization: The Way We Live Now’ at the NGV 13.09.19 – 02.02.20

September 19, 2024

Anne Zahalka and Thomas Weinberger currently feature in the travelling exhibition ‘Civilization: The Way We Live Now’, an international photography exhibition of monumental scale. Bringing together the work of over 100 contemporary photographers, the exhibition depicts our globalised world as an extremely complex collective enterprise. After stints in Seoul and Beijing, ‘Civilization’ is now on display at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. Following that, the show will open at the Auckland Art Gallery in 2020 and then move to Europe in 2021.

Weinberger’s arresting image ‘Nr. 7’ uses a synthesis of day and night to create an unsettlingly detailed image, prompting viewers to question whether the architecture depicted actually exists. Zahalka’s two works ‘Sunday 2:09pm’ and ‘Sunday 11:08am’ combine portraiture and genre scenes, recording ordinary domestic life in striking tableaus.
