Anne Zahalka ‘The Wanderer Upon A Castle Came…’ at Jarvis Dooney Galerie, Berlin

September 28, 2018

As part of the European Month of Photography 2018, Anne Zahalka’s series ‘Der Wanderer zum Schlosse kam…’ (The Wanderer Upon a Castle Came, 1986) will be on display at Jarvis Dooney Galerie in Berlin from 5 – 28 October. This exhibition revisits photographs taken during Zahalka’s residency in Berlin in 1986, where the artist first experienced living alone, completely disassociated from language and familiar things.

The artist says of the works: “The series was an attempt to describe the strangeness of Berlin and my initial feelings of being there. The old gothic building in which I found myself living, lay in close proximity to the Berlin wall – a forbidding back-fence. The physical and psychological presence of this structure had a considerable effect on the way I perceived my surroundings. I had the unsettling feeling of being watched, while watching. As an outsider I became engaged in a way of looking that sought to reveal difference and absorb similitude.”
